16 Juillet 2011, à Mamou en Guinée Conakry. Je (Nourou) débarque vers 17h00 à l’auberge Santikera avec 4 de mes étudiants, une auberge modeste mais assez bien fréquentée. On s’approche de la réception, on fait les formalités et on prend les clés de nos chambres. Médard, un de mes étudiants béninois, s’approche du réceptionniste, un mec de la trentaine environ. Médard demande : Avez-vous le Wifi ? Le réceptionniste de répondre : Les 8 filles là, tu les veux en même temps ou l’une après l’autre ? On se regarda tous, A Médard alors d’expliquer pendant 10 mn ce qu’on appelle WIFI. Plus tard, je m’approchai d’un autre client qui y était apparemment depuis deux jours, pour savoir si jamais Médard répondait à l’affirmatif, comment ferait le réceptionniste ? Il me répondit : mon cher, c’est bien facile ici. J’ai pris ma bouteille de bière SKOL et je me suis barré. Totalement le soir, en travaillant sur nos spécimens dans le grand hall, j’ai aussi bien compris que c’était bien faisable. « WiFi ou 8 filles », chacun comprend d’après la prononciation.
July 16, 2011, Mamou, Guinea Conakry. I (Nourou) disembark at around 5:00 pm at the Santikera hostel with 4 of my students. A modest but fairly busy hostel. We approached the reception desk, go through formalities and pick-up our room keys. Médard, one of my students, approaches the receptionist, a guy in his thirties. Médard asks: “Do you have Wifi? Phonetically, the receptionist understood “Huit filles”meaning 8 girls in French. The receptionist replied: “The 8 girls, do you want them all at once or one after the other? We all looked at each other, and it was then Médard’s turn to explain during 10 minutes what we call WIFI. Later, I approached another customer who had apparently been there for two days, to see if Médard would ever answer in the affirmative, what would the receptionist do? He replied: “My dear, it’s quite easy here”. I grabbed my bottle of SKOL beer and took off. Totally in the evening, working on our specimens in the hall, I could imagine that it was quite feasible. “WiFi or 8 girls”, everyone understands from the pronunciation.
